The fully rigged
ship VALHALLA 1170 tons was built by
Ramage & Ferguson, Leith in 1892 for Colonel Laycock J. F. VALHALLA was
bought by Lord Crawford (1902-1908) and participated with the Royal Yacht
Squadron of London. During part of 1905 and 1906 Lord Crawford made a scientific
expedition with the SY VALHALLA to South America, South Africa, Ceylon, and Madagascar,
and brought back a collection of rare birds which he presented to the
Zoological Society. She also did War service with the Royal Navy including a
period at Limnos, Aegean, during the Gallipoli campaign. After WWI, VALHALLA
was sold to France, converted into a fruit carrier and registered as a 1170 GRT
steamer. VALHALLA foundered in a storm on December 2nd, 1921, off Cape St.
Vincent (sic. Cabo São Vicente), while carrying oranges and wine from Valencia
to Dunkerque. Owned at the time by F. Baudoin, Le Havre, France.
