CABO DEL ÁGUA




El vapor CORIA fue encargado por S.A. Compañía Naviera Sevillana en los astilleros H.C. Grayson, de Garston, Liverpool.Su vida marítima resumida fue la siguiente:1919. Encargado en los astilleros por S.A. Compañía Naviera Sevillana. Se bautiza como CORIA.1920. Entregado a sus armadores a final de ese año.1922. Comprado por la Naviera Ybarra siendo rebautizado CABO DEL AGUA, segundo con ese nombre en la compañía.1924. Vendido a Mossgiel Steamship Co. Ltd. (J. Bruce & Co. Como managers). Se renombre ALPERA.1943. El 22 de mayo de ese año, a 15 millas de Cabo San Vicente es hundido por bombas lanzadas por aviones del Eje.El CORIA tenia las siguientes características técnicas según el Lloyd´s Register of Shipping; Año 1944-45, en que figuraba como ALPERA.ALPERA; ex CABO DEL AGUA; ex CORIA; tipo: shelter deck; 1 cubierta corrida; registro bruto: 1.777 toneladas; under deck: 1.546; registro neto: 914; clasificado como + 100 A1; entregado en diciembre de 1920

LLANCARVAN



Llancarvan Vapor inglês de 6000 ton. construído em 1937. Afundado em combate com 4 bombardeiros alemães em 30/05/1943 a 8 milhas SE Farol de Sagres

SHETLAND



SS Shetland Vapor Inglês de 1846 ton. construído em 1921. Afundado em combate com 2 bombardeiros alemães Focke-Wulf 4 mortos em 23/06/1943 a 1,4 milhas sul Farol de Sagres

VOLTURNO



Volturno SS was a British cargo steamer of 3,419grt built in 1914. On the 23rd June 1943 she was sunk in an air raid when 2 miles WNW of Cape St. Vincent on passage from Lisbon for the U.K. Algarve

FORT BATLE RIVER



FORT BATLE RIVER 7200 tons built in 1942 At 15.20 hours on 6 Mar, 1943, U-410 attacked the convoy KMS-10 west of Gibraltar and reported two ships damaged and one possible hit on a third ship. In fact, the Fort Battle River was sunk 50 miles SW Cape S. Vicente and the Fort Paskoyac was damaged. The master Albert Victor Parkinson Turnbull, 45 crew members, 10 gunners and nine passengers (army personnel) from the Fort Battle River were picked up by the Canadian corvette HMCS Shediac (K 110) (Lt J.E. Clayton) and the British merchant Empire Flamingo and landed at Gibraltar.

GRANGEPARK



On 20 November 1942, the German submarine U-263 (Kurt Nôlke) fired torpedoes at the convoy KMS-3, west of Gibraltar. Two ships from the convoy, Prins Harald and Grangepark 5132 tons built 1919 were sunk SW Cabo S. Vicente (N35º55' W10º14') and one torpedo exploded in the net defences of the British steam merchant Ocean Pilgrim (7.173 grt) The survivors from Grangepark (John Scott Webster) were picked up by HMS Fowey and landed at Gibraltar. Three crew members and one passenger died. The Prins Harald (Westbye Foss-Sørensen) was hit by one torpedo that started a fire in her ammunition hold. The crew took the liveboats, while the Captain and the first mate attempted to extinguish the fire. The ship blew up and sank, killing both. All survivors were picked up and landed in Gibraltar.




PENROSE



On September 3rd, 1942, U-107 attacked an unescorted convoy of five ships three miles 112° from Cape Sines near Setubal, Portugal. First the Hollinside was hit by one of two fired bow torpedoes and six minutes later the Penrose by one of two fired stern torpedoes. Three crew members from the Hollinside (Capt Edgar Campling) were lost and two crew members from the Penrose (Capt Dudley Allan Nicholls) were lost.This ship sunk near Cape S.Vicente The captain, 33 crew members, eight gunners and six passengers (repatriated survivors from the Avila Star) from Hollinside and the captain and 42 crew members from the Penrose were picked up by a Spanish trawler and landed at Lisbon. ETTRICK



ETTRICK MV was a British Passenger Motor Vessel of 11,279 tons built in 1938 by Barclay Curle & Company, Glasgow, Yard No 669 for the Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company. She was powered by two five cylinder Doxford~type opposed piston 2SCSA oil engines, diesels, twin screw, giving 20 knots. Engines by the shipbuilders. The Vessel Was On Charter to the Admiralty as a Troopship. On the 15th November 1942 she was torpedoed by German submarine U-155 at 0315, (80 kilometres south of Faro, Portugal).. She sank at 0836. She was on a voyage from Gibraltar to the Clyde in ballast, with a crew of 204, 66 naval ratings, and 41 gunners. 18 naval ratings and 5 Asian crew were lost; another Asian seaman died of his injuries. Survivors were taken to Gibraltar by the Norwegian destroyer HNoMS Glaisdal e (L44) and returned to the Uk in P&O´s Mooltan the following day  

AVENGER



HMS Avenger was a British escort carrier (13,785 tons) built in the United States as the passenger liner Rio Hudson. Transferred to the United Kingdom under Lend-Lease and later converted to an auxiliary aircraft carrier in March, 1942. While in convoy from North Africa to the Clyde in Scotland, she was torpedoed by the German submarine U-155 just west of the Rock of Gibraltar (87 kilometres south of Faro, Portugal).
The Avenger had been taking part in the North Africa landings before sailing for her home port on the Clyde, Scotland. At approximately 0307hrs the Avenger, part of Convoy MKF-1, was hit on the port side causing her bomb magazine to explode and blowing out the centre section of the ship. Enveloped in flames and black smoke, the Avenger sank in less than two minutes after the t orpedo hit. Sixty seven officers, including her captain, Cdr. A. P. Colthurst, and 446 ratings went down with the ship, a total of 514 men. Twelve survivors were picked up by the escorting destroyer HMS Glaisdale.

SS Baron Lovat cargueiro inglês 3395 tons built 1926, 104m comprimento, 14m boca, 10 nós velocidade. Afundado pelo submarino Italiano "Marconi" a SW Cabo S. Vicente em 06-06-41 numa viagem do Tyne para Huelva. Pertencia à empresa Hugh Hogarth & Sons Ltd

EMPIRE WARRIOR



Empire Warrior was a 1,306 GRT cargo ship which was built by Hamburg-Elbe Schiffsbau, Hamburg. Speed 10 noths 75m length width 11m Completed in 1921 as Bianca. Sold in 1927 to A Kirsten, Hamburg and renamed Elbe. Captured on 20 October 1939 in the North Sea by HMS Transylvania and escorted to Kirkwall, Orkney Islands. To MoWT and renamed Empire Warrior. Damaged on 19 June 1941 by bombing off Villa Real , Portugal.when she was preparing to enter the Guadiana river with the propose to provide the S. Domingos mines with coal. Crew rescued by a Marinha Portuguesa destroyer. A trawler attempted to tow her to shallow water but she broke free and sank.mile and a half south of Guadiana river bar loaded with 1300 tons of coal
