KAI

SS Kai, built by Osbourne, Graham & Co., Sunderland in 1883 and owned at the time of her loss by Dampsk. Selsk. Myren (Holm & Wonsild), Copenhagen, was a Danish steamer of 1391 tons. On November 5th, 1917, Kai, on a voyage from Melilla to Port Talbot with a cargo of iron ore, was scuttled by the German submarine U-63 (Otto Schultze), southeast of Cape St Vincent, Portugal. There were no casualties.

ESPINHO

SS ENERGIE was built by Armstrong, Mitchell & Co., Newcastle in 1887 for the Badische Schraubendampfschiffs Gesellschaft, Köln. In 1889 transfered to Rhein & See Schiffahrts Gesellschaft, Köln. On 23 February 1916, ENERGIE was seized by the Portuguese Government. She was assigned to Transportes Maritimos do Estado and renamed ESPINHO. On June 15th, 1917, ESPINHO, 800 tons / 87 on a voyage from Casablanca to Bordeaux with horses and pigs, was shelled and sunk by the German submarine U-39 (Walter Forstmann) off the Algarve coast. There were no human casualties.

VICTORIA

SS Victoria, built by Antwerp Engineering Co. Ltd., Hoboken in 1912 and owned at the time of her loss by Förnyade Ångfartygs A/B Svenska Lloyd, Göteborg, was a Swedish steamer of 1.226 tons.On March 18th, 1917, Victoria, on a voyage from Cadiz to Lisbon with general cargo and fruit, was sunk by the German submarine UC-67 (Karl Neumann), 20 MILES OFF PORTIMÃO.

TORVORE

Torvore SS was a Norwegian cargo steamer of 1,667grt date built 1882. On the 24th April 1917 she was stopped by German submarine U-35 (Lothar von Arnauld de la Periere) and sunk with charges/bombs off Cape St. Vincent, Portugal and about 2 miles SE of Sagres whilst on route from Swansea for Naples with a cargo of coal.

NORDSOEN

SS Nordsøen, built by Burmeister & Wain, Copenhagen in 1901 and owned at the time of her loss by M. Nielsen & Søn, Copenhagen, was a Danish steamer of 1055 tons.On April 24th, 1917, Nordsøen, on a voyage from Bergen to Genoa with a cargo of herring in barrels, was scuttled by the German submarine U-35 (Lothar von Arnauld de la Perière), 2 miles east of Punta de Sagres, off Cabo de Sao Vicente. There were no casualties.

LUIGI CIAMPA

SS Luigi Ciampa was an Italian steamer of 3988 tons, built by N. Odero fu A., Sestri Ponente in 1900 and owned at the time of her loss by F. S. Ciampa & figli, Castellamare. On January 4th, 1917, Luigi Ciampa, on a voyage from Philadelphia to Gibraltar with a cargo of wheat, was sunk by the German submarine UC-37 (Otto Launburg), 15 miles off Ponta de Sagres.

WILHELM KRAG

WILHELM KRAG vapor dinamarquês 3716 tons construído em 1882. Afundado com cargas explosivas pelo submarine alemão U-35 em 24-04-17 a 2 milhas ao largo da praia do Burgau Algarve  Wilhelm Krag é um dos quatro navios afundados na costa algarvia ao largo da Praia da Luz  pelo submarino alemão SM U-35 em plena Primeira Guerra Mundial. Este é um local com bastante fauna marinha, pois os destroços servem de abrigo a várias espécies e é,segundo os especialistas um dos melhores naufrágios existentes no Algarve O submarino Alemão SM U-35, comandado pelo comandante Lothar von Arnauld de la Perière, perseguiu e afundou no litoral do Algarve dois cargueiros dinamarqueses Wilhelm Krag e Nordsoen, outro norueguês o Torvore, e ainda uma embarcação francesa o Bienaimé Prof. Luigi, todos localizados no barlavento algarvio.

RIO PIRAHY

SS Rio Pirahy, built by J. Readhead & Sons, South Shields in 1901 and owned at the time of her loss by West of England Shipping Co. Ltd. (Geo. C. Shepton), London, was a British steamer of 3561 tons.On October 28th, 1916, Rio Pirahy, on a voyage from Livorno to Barry Roads in ballast, was scuttled by the German submarine U-63 (Otto Schultze), 60 miles south of Cabo Sao Vicente. There were no casualties

SS Torsdal, built by Tyne Iron Shipbuilding Co., Newcastle in 1894 and owned at the time of her loss by Wilh. Wilhelmsen, Tønsberg, was a Norwegian steamer of 3621 tons; 2299 nrt, 6000 dwt. 350.0 x 43.1 x 27.2; triple expansion engine (NE Mar. Eng. Co. Ltd., Newcastle), 340 nhp, 1760 ihp;On October 28th, 1916, Torsdal, on a voyage from Civitavecchia to Barry in ballast, was sunk by the German submarine U-63 (Otto Schultze), 25 miles southeast of Cape St. Vincent, Portugal. There were no casualties.

MARQUIS BACQUEHEM

Marquis Bacquehem SS was a British Cargo Steamer of 4,396 tons built in 1893 and owned by Nelson, Donkin & Co Ltd, London but requisioned by the Admiralty. On the 30th October 1916 she was torpedoed and sunk in the Atlantic when 50 mile SxE from Cape St. Vincent by German submarine U-32 when on a voyage from Calcutta to Middlesbrough with a cargo of Manganese Ore.

SELENE

SS Selene, built by Offic. e Cant. Liguri Anconitani, Ancona in 1903 and owned at the time of her loss by Soc. Commerciale Italiana di Navigazione, Genoa, was an Italian steamer of 3.955 tons. On October 28th, 1916, Selene, on a voyage from Norfolk to Italy, was sunk by the German submarine U-63 (Otto Schultze), 30 miles southeast of Cabo de Santa María. There were no casualties
