ESPINHO



SS ENERGIE was built by Armstrong, Mitchell & Co., Newcastle in 1887 for the Badische Schraubendampfschiffs Gesellschaft, Köln. In 1889 transfered to Rhein & See Schiffahrts Gesellschaft, Köln. On 23 February 1916, ENERGIE was seized by the Portuguese Government. She was assigned to Transportes Maritimos do Estado and renamed ESPINHO. On June 15th, 1917, ESPINHO, 800 tons / 87 on a voyage from Casablanca to Bordeaux with horses and pigs, was shelled and sunk by the German submarine U-39 (Walter Forstmann) off the Algarve coast. There were no human casualties.
