FORT BATLE RIVER 7200 tons built in 1942 At 15.20
hours on 6 Mar, 1943, U-410 attacked
the convoy KMS-10 west of Gibraltar and reported two ships damaged and one possible
hit on a third ship. In fact, the Fort Battle River was sunk
50 miles SW Cape S. Vicente and the Fort Paskoyac was damaged. The master
Albert Victor Parkinson Turnbull, 45 crew members, 10 gunners and nine
passengers (army personnel) from the Fort Battle River were
picked up by the Canadian corvette HMCS Shediac (K 110) (Lt J.E. Clayton) and
the British merchant Empire Flamingo and landed at Gibraltar.
