PENROSE



On September 3rd, 1942, U-107 attacked an unescorted convoy of five ships three miles 112° from Cape Sines near Setubal, Portugal. First the Hollinside was hit by one of two fired bow torpedoes and six minutes later the Penrose by one of two fired stern torpedoes. Three crew members from the Hollinside (Capt Edgar Campling) were lost and two crew members from the Penrose (Capt Dudley Allan Nicholls) were lost.This ship sunk near Cape S.Vicente The captain, 33 crew members, eight gunners and six passengers (repatriated survivors from the Avila Star) from Hollinside and the captain and 42 crew members from the Penrose were picked up by a Spanish trawler and landed at Lisbon.
