On 20
November 1942, the German submarine U-263 (Kurt
Nôlke) fired torpedoes at the convoy KMS-3, west of Gibraltar. Two ships from the
convoy, Prins Harald and Grangepark 5132
tons built 1919 were sunk SW Cabo S. Vicente
(N35º55' W10º14') and one torpedo exploded in the net defences of the
British steam merchant Ocean Pilgrim (7.173 grt) The survivors from Grangepark (John
Scott Webster) were picked up by HMS Fowey and landed at Gibraltar. Three crew
members and one passenger died. The Prins Harald (Westbye
Foss-Sørensen) was hit by one torpedo that started a fire in her ammunition
hold. The crew took the liveboats, while the Captain and the first mate attempted
to extinguish the fire. The ship blew up and sank, killing both. All survivors
were picked up and landed in Gibraltar.
